New Delhi: The Ministry of Science and Technology has launched a series of scientific developments in energy storage that are expected to reach demonstration at the pilot plant or application level in the coming months, a statement said Saturday.

The compilation of success stories consisting of 14 successful projects under the Materials for Energy Storage (MES) program initiated by Renu Swarup, Secretary, DST, would enable researchers, stakeholders and the general public to know and these can be expanded according to national needs and priorities in the near future, he added.

Recognizing the challenges and opportunities associated with materials discovery, DST, as part of its Clean Energy Research Initiative (CERI), has launched a thematic program of energetic materials research and technology, and these developments are the result of this initiative.

Materials discovery and development span the entire energy technology portfolio, from energy production and storage to delivery and end use. They lay the foundation for all innovation in clean energy: advanced batteries, solar cells, low energy semiconductors, thermal storage, coatings and catalysts for the conversion, capture and use of carbon dioxide. .

These new materials are one of the cornerstones of the global transition to a low carbon future.

Each newly discovered molecule is subjected to simulation, synthesis and characterization, with synthesis procedures taking 10 to 20 years at a very high cost.

However, recent developments in this area show potential for transformational change that could cut the time to design, optimize and discover new materials by at least 10 times, reducing it to one or two years, according to the release.

In order to accelerate this transformational change, the Materials for Energy Storage (MES) program supports research and development activities aimed at innovative materials for energy storage and the construction of energy storage devices with improved efficiency for multifunctional applications.

A set of 77 projects have been supported under this program so far in three important areas such as battery, supercapacitor and thermal energy storage. All of these projects are currently at different stages of implementation, he added.
