Each month, more Oakland residents are taking advantage of the free Bulky Block Party bulky waste drop-off events – usually held on the last Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 7101 Edgewater Drive. This month, Oakland Public Works (OPW), which organizes the event, is making some adjustments to reduce lines and wait times and make the experience more convenient for residents.

Although the event has always been restricted to Oakland residents, some customers have used the event for commercial waste. Business customers will be redirected from these events – they can pay to dispose of large loads of trash nearby at the Waste Management Davis Street Transfer Station, located at 2615 Davis Street in San Leandro.

Additionally, OPW will limit the rental vehicles allowed at the event. Personal vehicles and rental moving vehicles like trucks and vans are still allowed – up to 10′ in length. Rental moving trucks over 10 feet will be redirected to the Davis Street transfer station.

These updates to the Bulky Block Party service are intended to get more Oaklanders around the line faster.

OPW knows that Oaklanders are proud of their neighborhoods and want to do what they can to keep them clean and healthy. Today’s announcement therefore aims to support the community by promoting services that are available and free. There are several options for getting rid of bulky items, in addition to Bulky Block Party events No Oakland resident should have to pay extra to have their bulky items disposed of. To get rid of items that don’t fit in your trash basket, the following services are available free of charge:

  • Bulky curbside pickup service is available to all Oakland residents, provided by WMAC. As announced in November, this includes better access for tenants. Residents of multi-family dwellings (buildings with more than four residential units) can now schedule a curbside meetup once a year directly with WMAC instead of requesting meetups through their landlords as they previously had to. Residents of single-family dwellings (buildings with up to four residential units) can schedule curbside bulky item pickup appointments, increasing from once a year to twice a year. Find terms of service and instructions at www.oaklandrecycles.com. Contact WMAC to schedule a bulky pickup by calling 1-888-WM-BULKY.
  • All Oakland residents can make an appointment with WMAC for to file their bulky items free of charge at the Resource Recovery Complex and Davis Street Transfer Station (located at 2615 Davis Street in San Leandro). To make an appointment, call (510) 613-8710.

Fast and Free Removal of Hazardous Household Waste: Household hazardous waste never belongs in curbside carts and is not accepted at Bulky Block Party events. Bring fluorescent light bulbs, paints, stains, solvents, thinners, adhesives, pesticides, cleaners, garden and automotive chemicals, spray cans, batteries, and electronic waste to the household hazardous waste facility located at 2100 East 7th Street, Oakland. This service, provided by Alameda County, is free to all Oakland residents. Visit Household-hazwaste.org or call (800) 606-6606 for details, to schedule an appointment, or for hours of operation.
