Alfa Romeo boss Frédéric Vasseur has Antonio Giovinazzi at the top of its list for 2022, but two new pilots cannot be ruled out.
The Swiss team continued with Giovinazzi and Kimi Raikkonen for 2021, the third season of this partnership, although just like the two previous seasons, questions continue to hang over the future of the two drivers.
At 41, Raikkonen’s Formula 1 career is certainly coming to an end, and some have called on the Finn to stop him at the end of the season with unusual mistakes now creeping in.
Giovinazzi meanwhile did a respectable job during his time at Alfa Romeo, but it seems the Italian has yet to take advantage of this moment of escape that makes him indispensable.
He is, however, at the top of Vasseur’s list for 2022, but the Alfa manager is not necessarily interested in keeping the same roster for 2022 just to keep a benchmark.
“It could be a point, but it’s not necessary,” he said of the suggestion to keep Giovinazzi or Raikkonen for the sequel, as quoted by The Race.
“We can say that it’s always good to have a kind of continuity in the team because at least we have a reference and we can compare with the feeling of the previous year and blah blah, blah.
“Let’s see. We’ll make the choice when it’s the right time to do it. We could keep the same line-up or we could change. It’s all open.
“And I think it’s also quite comfortable for the team to have everything open. It’s good for Antonio and good for Kimi.
“I don’t feel that being under pressure is inherently bad. We need pressure to perform. And I don’t want to be in an easy world.
“He [Giovinazzi] is on the list for sure, he is part of the family, he is improving. And he’ll be at the top of the list for next year.
“Now I want to see more improvements, more results in the race.
“Everyone is under pressure. I am under pressure, the engineers are under pressure, the pilots must be under pressure. It’s a world of pressure.
Vasseur won’t rush any decisions in the driver market, however, but he’s rather happy to wait and see what moves happen higher up the grid which will create a domino effect from there.
Alfa Romeo has maintained an affiliation with Ferrari in recent years, responsible for Giovinazzi’s headquarters within the team, but the renewed Sauber / Alfa Romeo deal means the team now has full responsibility for its range of cars. pilots.
“I’ll do it like in the past, I think it’s good for us to keep everyone under pressure. And we’ll see how the market evolves, ”Vasseur explained.
“The system will fill the places at the top. This means Mercedes has to make a decision and then Red Bull has to make a decision and like a domino at some point we will have opportunities on the table and we will make a decision at this point.
