Welcome to CimarronARTS! Archives

Lance McDaniel with CimarronARTS & Lyric Understudies

CimarronARTS! teamed with Lyric Understudies to present the February 23rd, Saturday matinee of "Greater Tuna."  One of the most popular and performed plays in the United States, "Greater Tuna" is showing at the newly restored Plaza Theatre at 1725 NW 16th Street through March 2.  The February 23rd matinee was followed by a CimARTS! hosted cocktail reception next door at Plaza Java Cafe.

Co-created by Bartlesville native Joe Sears, Greater Tuna is the hilarious comedy about small-town life in Tuna, the third smallest town in Texas, where the Lion's Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. The eclectic band of Tuna citizens are portrayed by only two performers, making this satire on life in rural America even more uproarious. Lyric proudly presents Jonathan Beck Reed and David Coffee as they depict the inhabitants of Tuna -- men, women, children and animals! Greater Tuna is Lyric’s first ever non-musical comedic play, intended to fill the Plaza Theatre with unending chuckles and satisfying belly laughs.

Watch for more CimarronARTS! events this year, advertised both on this page, and in the Cimarron eNewsletter.

One Act Play Festival March 30

Despite the horrific weather, over 50 people showed up to our first One Act play Festival. Three plays were presented. The Audience Award went to Playwright Diana Silver and Director Lauren Fair for their play about a lesbian owning up to the truth and the Judges Award went to Writer/Director Matt Brown for his absurdist comedy about two men at a bus stop. A few plays scheduled to be performed were cancelled due to the flooded streets and tornadoes. Overall, the event was a success and will be repeated in our next season.

Winners of the CimarronARTS! Poetry Slam

CimarronARTS! first event, Slammin’ Over the Rainbow, was fantastic. Over 60 people packed into Galileo despite the icy weather, watching Angel Hamilton bring the house down with the sexiest poetry of the evening. Paula Sophia Shonauer took 2nd place and Jerome Braggs 3rd place. Marcus Hooks won the Spoken Word contest. The night was filled with poetry about sex, love, race, gender, stereotypes, emotions and life. We are already fielding request for another Rainbow Slam, so stay tuned.

Visual Art Show Winners

CimarronARTS! lured over a hundred people to their first Visual Art Show at Velvet Monkey Too Salon on Saturday, February 24. Four winners split $250 worth of prize money, including Leigh Tomlin, Audience Award Winner; Camista Coyle, Audience Award Runner-Up; Ashley Griffith, Judges Award; and, Delvie McPherson, Judges Award. The show was the second event from CimarronARTS!, a project of the Cimarron Alliance Foundation created to build community around Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Art. “We were thrilled to have such a big turnout,” gushed Josh Beasley, co-chair of the event, “the artists were great, the crowd was enthusiastic and the crew from Velvet Monkey was fabulous as always.” Several pieces were sold at the event, including a piece for silent auction won by the always-generous Homer Cobb.
